Palindrome time: Amabo Obama!

Laurent Hodges, a very smart Ames resident, explains that the palindrome "amabo Obama" is Latin for "I will love Obama."

Brainy folks, those Amesians! I kind of doubt the country is ready for political slogans in Latin, though.

[Bonus tidbit: I took Latin; my high school's Latin Club motto was, "Semper ubi sub ubi." It means, "Always...where...under...where." Get it?]

That's not quite right. One, in Latin the verb usually goes at the end of the sentence. And two, in Latin a noun ending in "a" gets an "m" added to it when it's the object of a verb. So the Latin for "I will love Obama" is "Obamam amabo". Which is still a palindrome.

ajd's correction is true if one assumes Obama is a 1st declension noun. However, there's a perfectly legitimate way for "amabo Obama" (or "Obama amabo") to be a grammatically correct expression. In Latin poetry, particularly Horace and later authors of the Silver age, 3rd declension nouns of Greek origin often take -a as the accusative masculine singular ending: for example, heroa, Cyclopa, Agamemnona, aera, aethera.

Or how about this: Obama, being the nominative and not ending in -us, is also the vocative, so it can be taken as directly addressing Obama. "Obama amabo" therefore becomes "Obama, I will love you" where "te" ("Obama, te amabo") is implied.

In Medieval Latin where non-Roman vernacular names which have not been given Latin equivalents at the time of writing (Wynifred hadn't yet become Bonifacius for example) the vernacular name can be inserted into the Latin sentence uninflected. Since I always work with Medieval Latin, "Obama amabo" or "amabo Obama" both work fine for me. --Pat

Well, "amabo" in Latin also is the word Romans used for "please". So it could be "Obama, please." That could be construed as having a scant racist tone, so I highly doubt it's being used that way. Most people I've seen using the expression have been supporters and not critics or opponents.

Sooo... obama means the reverse of "i will love" and of "please".

Considering he is the clone of Akhnaten and his CIA codename is Renegade ... this does not bode well.
