Jane Goodall's mystical connections

For as long as I can remember, I have admired Jane Goodall. Lauren and I got an opportunity to meet her once, at the Science Museum of Minnesota. It was am amazing moment. Lauren, who was about 4, had drawn a picture for Dr. Goodall, and handed it to her with a brief explanation. It was a picture of a lizard. Lauren then asked Dr. Goodall, "Are there lizards at Gombe?" Dr. Goodall's face brightened and became animated, and she told Lauren that yes, there are several kinds of lizards, both large and small, at Gombe stream. Dr. Goodall also signed a book and a copy of National Geographic for us. I shook her hand and thanked her for talking with us, and walked away, in awe.

Here's a nice piece in Salon, about Jane Goodall's work at Gombe and her own moments of awe and contemplation and reverence. It's by Steve Paulson, and is part of the "Atoms and Eden: Conversations about Science and Faith" series.
