Today's Internet is on fire with a debate over how the political ruling class views the American people. Faced with electoral and legislative losses, some liberals, who were flush with the joy of victory just over a year ago, have gone back to an ol' refrain: we lose because the American people are stupid.

Charles Krauthammer puts it this way:

The dim, led by the malicious, vote incorrectly.

Gerard Alexander asks: why are liberals so condescending?

As if on cue, Jacob Weisberg at Slate blames the current economic and "political" crisis (re: "we can't get our crap passed") on the "childish, ignorant American people."

Tara and I are often asked how we make our marriage work. We get along--and have many friends who have diverse political views--because we never treat people with different views as dimwits. It's a lesson some in the political class have yet to learn.
