I spend a lot of time over the holidays listening to classic Christmas music and watching classic films.
There was a time when we loved each other and made fun of politicians...Will Rogers and Mark Twain come to mind.
Then politicians realized that they could win elections by turning people against each other. Political commentators could make a lot of money doing that, as well.
And voters decided to adopt this approach. A clever put-down trumps a dry discussion of facts.
We avoid acknowledging this approach by railing against "special interest groups," pretending that the members of these groups are not our neighbors...just faceless "evil others."
Politicians represent us. When they can't get something done, they simply reflect the extreme divisions that currently exist in the political realm in this country.
